Is Sachin Tendulkar preventing India from having fast bowlers?

This week, Zaheer Khan said:

“Indian bodies are not designed to bowl fast.”

Assuming that Zaheer has chosen his words carefully, this seems to indicate that he believes that humans are ‘designed’. If they are designed by God, and Sachin is God, then we can conclude that the Mumbai batsman’s blueprint is flawed or perhaps prejudiced such that he has an easier time in the nets.

Alternatively, Zaheer may be hinting that Indian cricketers are designed by scientists through manipulation of genetic code. To us, this makes more sense. If your firm had the wherewithal to create a cricketer in this manner, it would demand a decent return on its investment.

This is an age of short-form cricket, where runs are the currency, and where long one-day series and back-to-back Tests sap the influence of those who carry out the most physical role in cricket. It simply makes no financial sense to design a fast bowler. It’s too risky an investment and the rewards simply don’t justify it.

Of course, even if Zaheer’s wrong, natural selection will still mean other sorts of cricketers predominate in this cricket ecosystem.

  1. No, it just means most Indians are genetically inferior to other races in terms of physical athleticism.

Broadly speaking, Indians find it hard to put on muscle and find it easier to put on fat.

Thats the reason why there are no good Indian footballers or stars in any sport requiring a high level of physical strength and fitness.

    1. Racist. We like to use our brains if we can get away without using our strength. Besides who needs sports requiring physical strength when we have cricket which requires lazing around the field for 8 hours a day, and sometimes 3-4 days a week.

  2. I clearly have the body of an Indian. Or at least it was made to Indian designs. Not blueprints as such as they have been obsolete for 70 years or so, Fred Trueman being the last English Test bowler to be built from blueprints, which sadly were burned by the MCC at Gubby Allen’s behest)

  3. I wouldn’t have had you down as an “intelligent design” dude, KC.

Me, I’m more attracted to Pastafarianism:

Not quite sure where the Zaheer Khan quote might fit in with the CFM creed. But I wouldn’t like to have to see off Zaheer’s bowling with just a “Noodly Appendage” between me and it.

    1. I don’t know whether to be more offended by the fact that you take me for an intelligent design dude or because you think I don’t know of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

    2. Maximum insult would be to assume that someone was an intelligent design dude despite knowing about the Flying Spag Monster.

Actually, come to think of it, the ill-founded accusations of racism on this thread are surely maximum insult.

But no insult was intended at all on my part – just diversion really.

  4. He quite clearly says that “Indian bodies are not designed”.

So I don’t know where you’re coming from at all here.

    You’re losing it.
