Space your feet roughly shoulder width apart. Stand side-on to the bowler on the balls of your feet but evenly balanced, pressing forward with your weight moving counter-crosswise while remaining perfectly still.

Bend your knees to the extent that you feel euphoric. Try and project a high-minded yet magnanimous air to the bowler. Histrionic overtones could lose you your wicket.

  1. Struggling on first sentence – are these my shoulders – or say – Chris Tremlett’s shoulders?

  2. Not shoulders – shoulder. Place your feet shoulder width apart.

Measure both shoulders, then take the mean, allowing for ‘give’.

Honestly, we don’t know how we could make it any clearer.

  3. “high-minded yet magnanimous air”…

…is this an extract from The Annals Of The Lawrence Elderbrook Cricket School by any chance?

  4. We do not recommend gin as a sports drink. Laurence’s cricket school will teach you nothing but bad habits.

Our sports drink recommendation is full fat milk.

  5. I tried following the instructions literally as I read them, phrase by phrase. Feet shoulder width apart. Side on to the bowler. Stand on the balls.

I had several distinct problems with this, not the least of which was getting my balls shoulder width apart as seemed to be required. After some hours I realised I’d misread it, and that it didn’t necessarily mean that the balls had to be under both feet. However, there was still the distance between my balls and the floor to overcome in order that I could stand on them. I thought I’d try it kneeling down as a first step, and I did eventually manage it (with the help of an old tie and a spoon). More practice is needed though, if I am to achieve this standing up.

  6. I avoided histrionic overtones by attempting with histrionic Undertones.

I hollered “here comes the summer” in a Derry accent several times and then changed key upwards in a startling manner.

    Batting lesson…

    ..change Key…

    …am I on to something?

  7. Whenever I place my bat on the ground, that is near my toes, my eyes aren’t naturally leveled. I searched various websites but couldn’t find an answer. Please do help.
